Hierophany and Pareidolia
Wilo Vargas
February 2 - 24, 2013

Peruvian artist Wilo Vargas makes his Houston debut with the G Gallery presentation of¬†Hierophany and Pereidolia.¬†Exploding with color and complexity, Vargas’s paintings are rooted in the symbols and historical richness of his native Peru but also possess a chaotic, psychedelic sensibility derived from a painting technique the artist first began developing following hallucinations brought on by a spider bite. The exhibition, the title of which refers to two psychological states in which objects are infused with significant and often sacred meanings based on the experience, culture, beliefs and emotions of the viewer, explores notions of awareness, observation, and perception by prompting viewers to be cognizant of and reconnect with their own cultural archives.
