Draw up a chair, please

“Protocol and courtesy.  It is inherent in these tables and chairs.  Please, you sit here, you over there.  Partners and strangers arranged.  Head of the table?  Head of the class, aisle, first class?  Arguments over the shape of tables for treaty making – in the family or the nation. The consummation of thoughts and deeds – impossible without a table.  Whether with highly evolved stylistic intent or understated simplicity, the chairs and tables of our lives provide a stage of familiarity, both righteous and profane.”  mhogensen
